Chess Classic Mainz 2005: all games in pgn-format
28.08.2005 - Two weeks ago to this day, the Chess Classic Mainz 2005 ended: time to revisit the games played at this event. And many exciting games were played, not only in the two great matches (Anand vs Grischuk and Svidler vs Almasi), but also in the FiNet Open, the Ordix Open, in the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championship and in the Unzicker Gala80. So here they are, all games of the Chess Classic Mainz in pgn format, together with a few hints on how to use them.

The games in conventional chess (Chess960 with starting position 518) can be replayed without any problems using any software that can display chess games. It is also possible to view and analyse the Chess960 games. There are two convenient ways to do that:

- Arena is an excellent user interface that can display chess games but also Chess960 games. Arena is free, and can be downloaded from the download area of this website. Click here to download Arena.

- The new version of Shredder from Stefan Meyer-Kahlen also supports Chess960. An evaluation version of Shredder can also be downloaded for free from this website. Click here to download Shredder.

Both Arena and Shredder can display games in conventional chess, and both allow the user to incorporate Chess960 engines to analyse games. There is one fact that needs to be kept in mind:

- Arena requires a pgn file in which the starting position of the Chess960 games are stored in the format X-FEN. Therefore we have put the term “xfen” into the file name of the file where the starting position is stored in X-FEN format.

- Shredder requires the starting position in a format called shredder-FEN, and the respective pgn file therefore has the term “shredderfen” in its name.

At this point in time, the current version of the user interface from Chessbase (Fritz 8) does not support Chess960. However, the new version, Fritz 9, which will come out on September 23, will support Chess960. At this point, Chessbase has not stated whether Fritz 9 will use the X-FEN or the Shredder-FEN notation to represent the starting position.

To ensure that everybody is able to replay the Chess960 games of the Chess Classic, we publish all Chess960 games in both formats. To download the games of an event, simply click on the event's name in the list below.
