Chess Classic

Great show against 60 opponents

07.08.2010 - World champion Viswanathan Anand has certainly played better simuls in Mainz, but the charm of a 40-board simultaneous exhibition is the fact that even world champions may stumble. Anand lost two games, against Bernd Grill of chess club SV Ebersbach in Germany and against Henrik Karlzen, a guest from Sweden. Four other players scored a draw and the final result was 36-4 in favor of the champ. In the other simul, Alexandra Kosteniuk played on 20 boards, but the difficulty was that she had to play 20 different starting positions in her Chess960 simul. Four players managed to score a draw against the Chess960 women word champion, but Kosteniuk won 16 games, scoring a fine 18-2. In her simul, the Russian beauty had to play against Lord Mayor Jens Beutel, who is a good amateur player and she offered him a draw. The spectators initially thought that the ambitious Mayor had rejected the draw offer to fight for a win, but after the game Beutel stated that he simply had not heard that Kosteniuk had offered him a draw! Kosteniuk duly continued the game and won.

Chess Tigers Hans Mokry, who celebrated his 76th birthday, received some gifts and was allowed to play with the white pieces.

Something different: Anand starts his simul on board 40!

... and could not guess that Bernd Grill would beat him!

Our Swedish guest Henrik Karlzen had the pleasure to win as well.
