Chess Classic Chess Classic Mainz - End of an Era Cost-benefit analysis requires clear statement for Mainz
| 15.02.2011 - A decade full of dedication and passion for international rapid chess has come to an end in Mainz. A splendid decade from 2001 to 2010 with ground-breaking innovations in tournament organization for world class players and amateurs alike and the “Mainz System” Chess960, based on the ideas of the American World Champion Robert James “Bobby” Fischer, made the distinction between the Chess Classic and other classical tournaments. Speed and entertainment, service and amenities for the spectators and participants were the ingredients of a unique merger that took place once a year between the 2000-year old royal game and the ancient city of Mainz. The main goal of the organizers back in 1994 was to connect the small world of chess with everyday society. Explaining the complex game of chess to a bigger audience, for chess amateurs and laymen with the use of modern technology was the next step, which was thoroughly and systematically implemented in the event. This yearly meeting place for chess players was highly appreciated by professionals and amateurs and the Chess Classic became a nationally and internationally renowned event, without a doubt one of the highlights on the international chess calendar. The clarity and reliability of the annual world championships in rapid chess and Chess960 and the clear qualification rules in the open tournaments was appreciated by everyone - over the years the organizers had created their own brand. The Chess Classic atmosphere with the spacious Rheingoldhalle, Congress Centre and Hilton Mainz, on the banks of the river Rhine, but still in the centre of the city Mainz was perfect and unparalleled for a top-class and mass sports event. more... |

Chess Classic GRENKE OPEN-LIVE
| 08.08.2010 - It is not a secret that most chessplayers are notorious longsleepers. Getting up on a Sunday morning to play six rounds in the tough GRENKE OPEN is not a perfect start of the day for everybody. To cheer up the players on this sunny Sunday morning, the Queen song “It’s a Beautiful Day” was played, minutes before the start of the 6th round: “It's a beautiful day- The sun is shining- I feel good - And no one's gonna stop me now, oh yeah”. Naiditsch must have had a bad night sleep, because he lost two dramatic games on Saturday in rounds 3 and 5. There are still 12 players with a perfect 5/5 score, among them favourites like Aronian, Grishuk and Karjakin. Quite remarkable is the good start of two Polish grandmasters, Kempinski and Markowski, who also have a 100% score. But can they keep the pace on Sunday? Chess Classic 701 participants in GRENKE OPEN – Twelve players with a 100% score after the first day
| 08.08.2010 - This year, the symbolic “700” barrier was cracked: despite the fantastic summer weather, 701 chess players came to Mainz to play the GRENKE OPEN. We counted no less than 165 players with an international title in this strong field, in which the top ten has an average ELO of 2727! As we heard from many chess fans today, playing chess is not the only reason to come to one of the oldest cities in Germany. Being part of the chess community and having the unique chance to play a world championship with top players in one single tournament is the main reason for their pilgrimage to Mainz. After five rounds in the GRENKE OPEN, twelve players still have a perfect 5/5 score: Aronian, Gashimov, Karjakin, Grishuk, Bologan, Kamsky, Kasimdhzanov, Inarkiev, Bareev and Gustafsson, Kempinski and Markowski. more... Chess Classic Great show against 60 opponents
| 07.08.2010 - World champion Viswanathan Anand has certainly played better simuls in Mainz, but the charm of a 40-board simultaneous exhibition is the fact that even world champions may stumble. Anand lost two games, against Bernd Grill of chess club SV Ebersbach in Germany and against Henrik Karlzen, a guest from Sweden. Four other players scored a draw and the final result was 36-4 in favor of the champ. In the other simul, Alexandra Kosteniuk played on 20 boards, but the difficulty was that she had to play 20 different starting positions in her Chess960 simul. Four players managed to score a draw against the Chess960 women word champion, but Kosteniuk won 16 games, scoring a fine 18-2. In her simul, the Russian beauty had to play against Lord Mayor Jens Beutel, who is a good amateur player and she offered him a draw. The spectators initially thought that the ambitious Mayor had rejected the draw offer to fight for a win, but after the game Beutel stated that he simply had not heard that Kosteniuk had offered him a draw! Kosteniuk duly continued the game and won. more... Results Anand-simul (PDF)

| 27.07.2010 - The tenth edition of the Chess Classic Mainz is just days away. From 06-08 August 2010, Mainz will be the centre of the rapid chess world.
